GOOD NEWS FOR FOOD ALLERGY SUFFERERS AND THEIR FAMILIES! Inspirational Stories Of Living With And Conquering Their Food Allergy …  7 Food Allergy Sufferers Tell Their Tales And Reveal …

How We Lived In Fear Of Life –Threatening
Accidental Anaphylaxis
Due To Exposure To Everyday Foods….
And Ways We Found To Cope with Our Food Allergy.

“I have been suffering from a gluten allergy since I was a child, but this allergy only came to my discovery in my adult life.”

This is how Heather begins to tell her story…

“Since I was 12 years old, I have felt an intense inability to control my reactions. Over the years,
I had come to the belief that I was just an angry, hateful person who was incapable of loving others.
I suppose you could say that my symptoms of a gluten allergy were apparent all along.
I just didn’t recognize them as being as a result of a food allergy”.

It is not just the physical symptoms of having a Food Allergy, but the often less acknowledged and understood psychological and or emotional impact it can have on your life… read on and discover the real-life stories of Heather and six other amazing people. Be empowered by learning about food allergies, and realize that while your experience is serious, you can live a wonderful, fulfilling life.

Dear Food Allergy Sufferer,

The term “food allergy” is widely misused and misunderstood.

Let me explain…

The terms food allergy and food intolerance does not mean the same thing.   A food intolerance, unlike a food allergy, does not involve the immune system and is not life-threatening.

Let’s take Lactose intolerance as an example.  If you have an intolerance to milk then you have trouble digesting the milk sugar lactose. Your symptoms may include abdominal cramps, bloating and diarrhoea.

A food allergy on the other-hand; occurs when the immune system reacts to a certain food.

The protein in food is the most common allergic component and a reaction occurs when the body creates immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to the food.   When these IgE antibodies react with the food, histamine and other chemicals (called “mediators”) are released.  Your immune system thinks it is under attack and causes an allergic reaction.

So, given a choice: You would probably rather have a food intolerance than a potentially life –threatening food allergy right?

Trouble is…we don’t get to choose because…

Allergy rates have massively increased over the past 20 years.

In Australia, recent studies in food allergies found one in 10 children under 12 months of age is affected. (ABC Health News, March 2013)
In America, nearly 17 million people have a food allergy.

The trouble is, the increased likelihood a person with one allergy developing multiple food allergies is around 30%.  Take a look at this chart from Stanford University of Medicine.

So you see you’re not alone, if you or one of your loved ones is suffering from a food allergy you are one of the many families who are frightened and frustrated having to cope on a daily basis.

So Who Am I And Why Should You Listen To Me?

Let me take you back to when I started my own business almost 10 years ago in the Beauty Industry.

There were many aspects of owning and operating my Salon that I loved, but the best part was connecting with people and building strong, open and honest relationships with my clients.

Being required to ask questions to help establish a client’s personal and medical history was part of my salon procedures. Probing and prodding a little here and there to uncover what kept my clients awake at night, and determine their fears and frustrations really helped me understand and develop the right services and treatments to provide to them. You see I wanted to make a real difference to their lives.

I seemed to be hearing more and more about two emerging “trends” – Vitamin D deficiency amongst my clients and their discovery of a food allergy within their family.

I became intrigued and remembered that even members of my own family experience food allergies and intolerance to Wheat, Milk and Seafood!
So, I started surfing the internet for any information on food allergies. I found many clinical sites which scared me half to death when describing that allergic reactions can include life-threatening anaphylactic responses such as biphasic anaphylaxis and vasodilation.

I felt like I was reading a whole new language. I became quite frustrated and confused with the huge volume of information available, especially when so much of it was written in medical jargon. I am tertiary educated with further qualifications as a beautician and laser technician, yet I still found the information confusing!

And then I spoke to my Mum!

She reminded me in the mid 1980’s she had suffered from quite bad migraine headaches.  Although initial tests with her GP showed no apparent reason for them she gradually became increasingly ill and tired. Experiencing symptoms similar to that of having the flu.

By the end of 1996 she could no longer function at her work!

Looking for answers she met with several medical experts and over a period of years tried many types of remedies both herbal and homeopathic to varied success.

She found a new doctor who seemed to have some answers.

He suggested it could be food allergies.

He specialised in Vega Testing -  an electrical reading machine developed to process and read the body's responses to different homeopathic substances.

Mums  test showed several mild food intolerances but the main culprit was wheat or more specifically gluten.

Gradually over a period of 3 years adopting a combined approach of eliminating foods from her diet, adding nutritional and supplement support as well as weekly vitamin injections she was on her way forward to better health.

Wow…I was blown away by Mum’s story!

You see, my husband and I had been living in the UK at the time, so the distance between us meant that I hadn’t been really fully aware of what Mum was going through…I suspect she didn’t want to worry me!

Now I realize how debilitating living with a food allergy can be!

Hearing Mum’s personal journey made me wonder how many other people were suffering from similar ailments and were being miss–diagnosed and treated when the cause could be an allergy to food!

So, through my research I found 7 amazing people to interview and in bringing their stories together discovered they all had one thing in common… they all have a food allergy and were willing to tell their stories.

Next, I packaged-up all the information in an easy-to-read user-friendly e-Book format -

Life With Food Allergies – Seven Personal StoriesThe e-book is called “Life With Food Allergies – Seven Personal Stories.”

And that, in a nut shell (please pardon the pun!) is how this e-Book came to be.

I have also set up this web-site to share this information with others, which I hope will also raise awareness of the impact living with a food allergy has upon families and how it affects their daily lives.

"From my experience, Food Allergies has been a common topic for discussion amongst the parents of pre-school and primary age children. There seems to be a lot of anecdotes and anxiety on the topic but what is needed are facts. This e-book contains real life experiences which will assist families become aware of the scope of food allergies and be better prepared for discussion with their health care professional."

Heather H, Melbourne, Australia

I also wanted to combine the stories with some easy-to-read factual information and frequently asked questions to provide some practical answers to questions most likely going around in the head of someone who is trying to learn more about their allergy.

Questions like:

  • What are the differences between food allergy, food intolerance and non-allergic food hypersensitivity?
  • What are the causes and why do the incidents of food allergies, food intolerance and non-allergic food hypersensitivity seem more prevalent today?
  • What are the most common food allergies?
  • Who is most at risk of developing a food allergy and at what age?
  • What are the signs and symptoms of having an allergic reaction to foods?
  • Does a food allergy get worse with each exposure?
  • What do I do in the event of a severe reaction?

Next we explore the areas of DIAGNOSES AND TREATMENT and ask…

  • What are the specific diagnostic tests to identify food allergies?
  • What type of doctor should I see?
  • What questions will a doctor or specialist allergist ask and what can I expect?
  • Is there an increased likelihood of developing more allergies if diagnosed with one allergy?
  • What are the latest methods of treatments?
  • What are the most effective food allergy medications?
  • Are there any alternative methods of treatment available? If so, what are they?

Lastly, we look into the questions surrounding LIVING WITH FOOD ALLERGIES…

  • childrensHow can food intolerances be prevented and managed?
  • What do I do if my child is having a reaction to a food allergen?
  • Can my child outgrow their allergy?
  • How do I manage the challenges of a child’ s food allergy and prevent a reaction occurring throughout their daily lives.

Suddenly you will feel you have some answers.

They were all here in the book.  If you’ve seen enough you can click below to …

Let me tell you a bit about the seven people who were interviewed. Their food allergy was caused by some of the most common foods, referred to as

  • Peanuts
  • Tree Nuts
  • Eggs
  • Cow’s Milk
  • Soy
  • Wheat
  • Shellfish
  • Fish

These are real stories, about real people, who had been diagnosed with a food allergy and openly share their “here’s how it happened” stories and “this is how I deal with it”.

Beth’s Story

First; there is Beth’s story, whose son was diagnosed as having several food allergies when he was just 6 years of age.  As a very young child, Beth’s son had always been underweight, but they never suspected or considered that it was due to a food allergy.

Beth re-lives the terrible event  “In addition to the continuous vomiting, he also started to break out in hives and was itching all over his body. He was sneezing a lot, had itchy eyes, and his nose just wouldn’t stop running.”

Beth’s son then went through a series of examinations and tests in order to try to get to the bottom of what caused the intense reaction. Results showed that their son was allergic to soy protein, tree nuts, peanuts and legumes and that he also suffered from cat and tree pollen allergies too!

Beth says her family has taken every action to learn as much as they can about her son’s food allergies and shares methods and basic rules she and her family applies to accommodate their son’s allergies.

Mary Ann’s Story

Sesame and EggsMary Anne’s story is quite scary…as it relates to her six year old son.  He suffers from two allergies and is anaphylactic to both sesame and eggs.
“We first discovered his allergy when he was only 14 months old!”

Until he is much older, Mary Ann must make sure if her son is in other people’s care they understand and learn how to use the EpiPen in case he is ever exposed and has a reaction.

What happened will astound you as Mary Ann remembers, “I had been preparing a dip of hummus with a recipe taken from a health cook book for children, my son only took a small lick on the tip of his tongue when    suddenly his skin turned completely red, hives instantly appeared on both his hands, and his face began to swell. Worst of all, his voice completely disappeared, and my little boy started pointed in his mouth, perhaps as a way of telling us that he couldn’t breathe. We called the ambulance immediately, and he began vomiting as we waited for them to arrive.”

Although the experience was shocking it did lead them to getting their son tested for any other allergies, and the results confirmed that he also suffers from an allergy to eggs.

Mary Ann shares through her story what the biggest challenges and changes have been to her family and gives sound advice to readers, encouraging the use of a wide range of resources to guide you through various aspects of living with an anaphylactic allergy.

Desiree’s Story

PeanutsDesiree’s parents first discovered that she was allergic to Peanuts when she was just a kid, and it’s believed that she was born with the allergy.  You see, she was tested for it at a very early age because her Father has a severe allergy to peanuts.

“I was put through a whole series of tests, including a skin test and blood test and it was discovered and diagnosed that I had an actual peanut allergy.

I’ve always grown up knowing about my severe allergy to peanuts, and accustomed to altering my life accordingly.  I’ve had to carry an EpiPen around with me since I was young and was taught how and when to use it myself.”

Desiree is now 26 years old and any hope that she may ‘grow-out’ of her allergy has faded.  The biggest challenge for her managing her food allergy is the need to always be mindful what food she eats when not at home.  Desiree explains what happened when she had a momentary lapse in judgment!  Desiree explains in her own words what that experience meant to her, “the experience has made me even more diligent, which I suppose is a good thing overall.”

Dean’s Story

Prawns and Crab meatDean thinks it is pretty ironic that he has an allergy to shellfish and an intolerance to fish… given that he grew up by the beach and fishing was a child-hood past time!

Although he recalls as a family they were plain eaters, seafood and fish was plentiful. Any ‘tummy upsets’ he experienced as a boy were quickly brushed aside as having been the result of a sensitive stomach or caused from over excitement.

The symptoms he gets from eating prawns and crab meat have always been the same – either a feeling of nausea and /or vomiting. In the end, Dean came to his own conclusions; although he admits “maybe I was just slow in realising a connection” he eventually decided to eliminate Shellfish from his diet completely.

Dean also discovered that he has reactions to some fruits and if he eats mangos his throat gets very ‘prickly’ and tight, whilst melons, make his lips go ‘tingly’. Now, more out of precaution, he avoids drinking tropical drinks in case there is a hint of mango or melon.

Dean says he is lucky not to have a life-threatening reaction to shellfish or that his reaction is not that strong that he needs to avoid cross contamination.  Overall he has found it easy to get into the habit of avoiding or checking and asking if foods contain shellfish.

Heather’s Story

Bread“I have been suffering from a gluten allergy since I was a child, but this allergy only came to my discovery in my adult life.”

Heather’s story is fascinating…she couldn’t ‘work out’ why she had such terrible mood swings as young teenager. As she explains… “I had always thought it was the sugar in food that made me feel crazy and behave irrationally. Now, I know that it was as a result of  gluten.” But at first, her doctor prescribed medication for depression! It was years later that she began to look for alternatives and began to look at her diet.

She still had symptoms of anger and depression with the medication and 10 different supplements she was taking had not been helping. “I committed myself to going completely gluten-free for a month.”  Since witnessing the personal transformation in her overall health, she decided with her family to explore gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free (GFDFSF) living…and after 18 months has never looked back.  In Heather’s own words…”it feels great to be free!”

Lauren’s Story

As a yoga instructor and visual artist, Lauren has always been aware of her diet, even from the tender age of eight when she decided to become a vegetarian.  A visit to a naturopath, unraveled the mystery surrounding her health issues and through blood tests it was confirmed that she had a dairy allergy. As a result Lauren no longer suffers from digestive pain or bloating and tells, “Since cutting out gluten and dairy entirely from my diet, I’ve felt much healthier in so many ways I never could have anticipated.”

Lauren is fortunate that her reaction to eating dairy and gluten isn’t life threatening and believes adopting a positive attitude has helped her to not look at her diet limitations in terms of what she can’t have, but what she can have.

“Becoming more aware of how food affects my body has made me very attuned and I can look for different signs, based on the advice from my naturopath and my own independent research.”

Jeff’s Story

CornJeff only recently discovered he had an allergy to corn. You see, he had suffered from really bad headaches growing up and didn’t really know what caused them.  Pursuing advice from his doctor he started to eliminate foods from his diet. Once it was determined that corn was the cause to trigger his symptoms he began to adjust his life accordingly. To his way of thinking, his decision to eliminate corn from his diet was worth it as he didn’t want to feel awful anymore.

“I’ve already spent a lot of my life living with something I didn’t know existed and I feel I should really take advantage of whatever information and knowledge I have in order to try to live the healthiest and best life possible.”

Through his research, Jeff also discovered that not only a huge range of foods contain traces of corn, but many products and by-products from condiments to bath care products do too. “I think the average person would be really surprised to discover how many products contain corn.” Jeff reveals how he has educated himself in the whole process of food cultivation and that is why he is keen to share his experience with others.
